Version 90 is particularly good: it can alert you if your email address is included in a known data breach, it blocks those annoying allow-notifications popups, it blocks “fingerprinting” browser tracking and it brings its picture in picture video mode to the Mac version. But if we walk into objective territory, I don’t think it’s really possible to defend this hog theory.Firefox has long been the Swiss Army Knife of the internet and our favourite browser. Not liking something doesn’t require arguments. Has Chrome become a hog ? And isn’t Edge still almost a beta product in many areas ? On the other hand no matter the extent of your customisation, Chrome will always call home. Ignoring code, you can dig a little and understand that they weave privacy concerns inside the design of these features one of those concerns being that default-ons must allow complete opt-out. Everything is open source and a lot of people have checked that code. Mozilla provide a clear and complete guide to disable all network connections, along with explanations about the purpose of these connections.
– You can properly opt-out of everything in Firefox.
Both can use HTTP/2 and prefetch and network prediction.Ĭhrome is slightly better than Firefox in implementing web standards, but not by much. Chrome may win in UI responsiveness (until Firefox e10s is ready), Firefox wins with advanced JavaScript (thank you asm.js). – Firefox performance is almost identical to that of Chrome. – Your link seems to only talk about removal of features and what some people call dumbed down UI, isn’t it ? If so, whether you like streamlined UI or not, it’s hard to deny that it’s the polar opposite of hog. – There are no default social calls that I can think of off the top of my head. And Mozilla set up something recently to have those calls go through Mozilla when possible. – I think *all* popular browsers use Safebrowsing, no ? There is no other Google call I can think of. I don’t pay the wages :)Įlaborating on what Pants said… (and perhaps repeating a couple things too, but oh well) to me it’s not a big deal, the UI changes can be reversed, and if Mozilla want to streamline some of the maintenance/UI code, then fine. PS: no disrespect to gitoffthelawn – I just disagree with that particular post. just LET IT GO! It was 20 versions ago man … just LET IT GO. All to do with UI changes which can be regained from an extension or two. – the github link: so all the items listed are about Australis. or do you think Chrome is better in this regard? heh. Is that what you mean? If you mean telemetry, at FF lets yu opt out of most of it via the UI (and the rest via about:config). – Social calls? What are you on about? I’m not entirely what you are referring to. You mean the same calls that chrome makes? – What google calls? Do you mean the ones for safebrowsing that users can turn off, and that Mozilla strips any identifying data in outgoing calls, and uses a separate cookie jar etc. I really can’t take people who resort to adhominem attacks seriously. Whatever works for you :)Īlso, say what you like about Mozilla, but it does have a great product that has interesting unique features that make it a no-brainer – for me, what stands out is the extensive config, privacy issues, a better organized extension marketplace (the chrome one is a mess) and extensions (for now) have more scope. I use it rarely, but I find it too has stability issues, but it doesn’t “crash”, it’s just sluggish and sometimes unresponsive for short bursts. The browser can’t even be restarted, as the core process can’t even be killed. Chrome (and Iron) on the other hand, for 4 of the last 5 years (the last year I don’t have it open for more than an hour), for every version … has “crashed”, repeatedly – usually after being open somewhere over an hour or two – it’s random, but very frequent. Why?įF can run a session for days and days without a problem. I use Chrome and Iron daily for short spells for some sites.

“but Chrome does not have these issues FOR ME” – FTFYįor the last 5 years, I have run portable browsers – FF, Chrome, Opera, Iron etc – I have updated each in a timely manner, and used them all.
